To see
August — October 2019

The first project selected in the 2019 Project Room program is Marilia Furman’s immersive installation TO SEE. The project consists of a simultaneous film and projection system, in which the image appears only as a viewer enters the picture, sitting in the chair arranged at the entrance of the dark room, where a camera is aimed. A spotlight next to the camera illuminates the scene, positioned between the viewer and the projection of his image on the opposite wall. Thus, although the image is exposed to the subject, imposing itself as the only possible vision in the environment, the light of the spotlight, which enables visibility, aggressively interposes the eyes, blinding rather than making it visible.

TO SEE tries to propose the experience of such imposition, articulating image exposure and surveillance mechanisms, so as to echo not only the constant vigilance of functional images, but also the correlated phenomenon of virtual self-representation. The project is accompanied by the critical text by Uriel Bezzera (1992, Salvador) who was also selected by the jury in this year’s open call.

About the artist

Marilia Furman (1982, São Paulo) has a degree in fine arts from the University of São Paulo (USP) and photography by SENAC. Represented by PSM Gallery (Berlin) where she has presented two solo shows (2019, 2015), the artist seeks to build her work as a social critic and to explore the limits of art in this task. His works usually investigate the universe of the commodity and work, in the investigation of materials and diverse media that can give a body and visibility to these questions. She participated in exhibitions in several galleries and alternative art spaces such as Galeria Jaqueline Martins (São Paulo, 2017); Um Trabalho, Um Texto (São Paulo, 2017); Franz Joseph Kai 3, (Vienna, 2016); Casa do Povo (São Paulo, 2014); Itaú Cultural (São Paulo, Joinville and Recife, 2012; Rio de Janeiro, 2013) and was the manager of the cultural space Casa da Lagartixa between 2004 and 2006.
